Groovie Blocks are not complicated, but they're full of potential for helping children master basic math concepts. Children will understand Groovies immediately - they will stack them, knock them down, interlock them, make patterns and shapes, touch the shapes with their fingers, and more.
It's not essential to a child's learning that an adult be involved while playing with Groovie Blocks, but we encourage you to play with your child and their Groovies:
- Name or count the shapes out loud with your child
- Form equations for them to solve.
- Interlock numbers to teach them about place value.
- Introduce the concept of fractions.
- Ask them to match colors or shapes.
- Let your child create patterns and abstract designs.
- Challenge them, puzzle them, and then let them explore on their own.
- Feel free to create your own games and activities, too.
Once you have planted the seed for the various concepts, children will start to do activities on their own. A child cannot help but absorb math concepts while playing with Groovies!
Groovie Blocks also help children develop fine motor skills - just connecting them to each other is good practice. Have your child put their Groovies away in the box so that the grooved sides all fit together; this is a learning experience of seeing how parts make up a whole. You can also interlock the blocks so that they are staggered.
The set contains 28 grooved blocks (each 1.75 inches) with embossed numerals and math symbols, plus geometric shape sets that correspond to the number on the opposite side.
